Bernard Shaw
George Bernard Shaw (1856 – 1950)
[ but he hated and avoided the “George” ]

I generally try to avoid “correcting” an author’s spelling or punctuation unless I am certain the change corrects a typographical error. In Shaw’s case, I make an exception: he deliberately omitted apostrophes in contractions, but I find his practice to be ahead of our time as well as his own.

I have therefore modified his texts to conform to a convention he despised, in hopes they will be the better appreciated without typographical distractions.
